THOUSANDS of people packed Southsea Common today to take part in the Race For Life.

More than 9,000 women ran, jogged and walked the 10km and 5km routes to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Organisers are hoping the total amount raised will be around £850,000 after what is thought to have been the biggest event in the region.

Supporters lined the fences along the route to cheer on friends, family and colleagues who all want to help beat cancer.

Lisa Gadeke, 43, of Lowcay Road in Southsea, said: ‘It was a lovely event.

‘I was taking part because I like to run but I support the event and the cause.

‘It’s nice to see everyone coming together like this to help each other through something which affects so many people.’
