CARING for members of the family is often something that is taken for granted.

But that’s certainly not the case with Dorothy Sawyer.

The 63-year-old, from Basin Street, North End, was nominated for the Readers’ Choice award in The News’ Woman of the Year Awards for her devotion to caring for their elderly father, and sister who has learning difficulties.

Dorothy also looks after her grandson who has severe autism.

Anne said: ‘The list of selfless acts that Dorothy carries out on a day-to-day basis is endless.

‘She liaises with the various agencies, doctors and hospitals which help ensure dad and Lorraine remain in the family home. Without her this would not be possible.’

Dorothy also cleans for a blind lady once a week, never takes a holiday and prefers to give her time and energy to help her family.

Anne added: ‘She is not a professional but has meetings with social services and related agencies almost on a daily basis.

‘I am so proud of her.’

Dorothy said: ‘I’m totally overwhelmed and humbled.’
