BIG band music and a man dressed as a nun are not normal sounds and sights at HMS Sultan’s volunteer band concerts.
But as Christmas draws closer upon us, friends, family members and colleagues watched the band’s annual Christmas concert in the Gosport base’s Brunel Theatre.
The award-winning band and corps of drums played a variety of music including Christmas tunes, Eastney and Rule Britannia.
Singer Liz Hubbuck, who has been a frequent guest vocalist for the Royal Marines Band Service, also performed three songs with the band.
It was one of the first times the volunteer band has deviated away from military music, playing a jazz version of Santa Clause is Coming to Town and symphonic highlights from the hit movie, Frozen.
Lt Mark Rooke, who was playing in the band last night, said: ‘I think it went really well. We have been practising for a couple of months but this was one of the first times we have done it with the singer. It is amazing to see how we perform with a singer. We are a military concert band so this was something a bit different for us.’
Mark and his wife, Petty Officer Joanne Rooke, met through the band.
Stepping up to the challenge of first clarinet, she said: ‘It was really hard work. I have been on maternity leave so I have been getting back into it. I stepped up last night so I had to practice the music at lunchtime.’
