BANDS will take part in an Olympics-inspired music marathon.

The Bandstand Marathon 2011 takes place at Southsea Bandstand on Sunday.

Similar events will be held simultaneously at other venues across the country.

The event is part of the Cultural Olympiad scheme which aims to encourage participation in the 2012 Olympic games.

Organiser Ali Smith said: ‘We are very proud to be providing one of the most widespread cultural events.

‘The Bandstand Marathon started in 2008 with the aim of enlivening public spaces and celebrating the nation’s bandstands.

‘We expect this year to be bigger than ever.’

The bandstand performances start at 2pm and finish at 4pm.

The afternoon will include a performance from samba band Batala Portsmouth.

The project was recently awarded the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme which recognises projects that are inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.

It aims to bring different types of live music to cities while encouraging young people to get involved in creative events in the run-up to next year’s Olympics.
