THE winner of a contest to design the official poster for the America’s Cup World Series has been revealed.

Southsea freelance illustrator Dave Thompson came out on top of the competition, organised by the Aspex Gallery and the organisers of the Portsmouth cup series, Team Origin.

The judges were impressed by Mr Thompson’s Art Deco-inspired poster styles, inspired by 1950s travel art.

He will now move on to design the official event poster, which will be seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors coming to the city for the occasion from July 23 to 26.

Joanne Bushnell, director of Aspex Gallery, praised Thompson’s work and called him ‘a deserving winner’.

She said: ‘The standard of entries was very high, as we had expected given the quality of artists living and working in the region.

‘But of all the entries we received, Dave’s really captured the energy and the atmosphere of the America’s Cup Portsmouth event. We’re excited to see his work dotted around the city come July.’
