A ST Bernard dog which was taken to an animal shelter close to death has been found a new home.
The dog, named Bernie by shelter staff, was found abandoned, exhausted and with open wounds in the New Forest last month and taken to the Stubbington Ark animal shelter.
It was initially feared that the pure-bred would have to be put down.
Mike Ward, the Ark’s manager said: ‘Bernie is now improving in leaps and bounds – literally. Megan, her carer, is now being taken for walks as Bernie drags her down the grassy run alongside our A block.
‘With a lot of help from St Bernard Trust rescue group, Bernie is assured of a home with an experienced owner and her own two St Bernards resident in a 14th Century house in Derbyshire.’ The RSPCA was unable to find Bernie’s owner so no-one has been charged with animal cruelty.
