BRIT-winning singer Tom Odell is likely to have his biggest ever chart hit after being chosen to perform the song for John Lewis’s Christmas advert.

The 23-year-old from Chichester is performing a version of the song Real Love, which was a number four hit for The Beatles in March 1996.

His two predecessors in the role have both had number one singles on the back of their campaigns and the firm’s commercials have spawned numerous hits.

Until now, Odell has achieved just one top 40 single, making it to number 10 with his single Another Love last year, although his debut album did go on to top the charts.

John Lewis has now unveiled the advert, which cost £1m to make. The advert can be watched on YouTube.

The full 120-second advert follows Sam and Monty over a year of friendship, before the boy realises that his penguin is sad and longing for a companion.

Happily, Christmas morning sees Sam surprising Monty with the gift of a new penguin friend named Mabel, accompanied by the music and strapline Give Someone The Christmas They’ve Been Dreaming Of.

Odell’s track began life as a solo demo by John Lennon, written in his New York home in 1977.

When Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were looking for singles to include in their anthology project, they provided new backing for Lennon’s voice to overhaul the rough tape.
