ASTRONOMER Sir Patrick Moore will be laid to rest in a private funeral, his friends say.

But the life of the 89-year-old, from Selsey, will be celebrated in public in March on what would have been his 90th birthday.

Even the date of the funeral is being kept under wraps in an attempt to keep the media away.

Last week, councillors at Selsey Town Council agreed the scientist, who made a huge contribution to the town, would be honoured in some way. One idea put forward is to build an observatory.

Council chairman Mike Beal said: ‘We will do what we can to get that to happen.’

Cllr Beal added that it was a combination of clear and dark skies which drew Sir Patrick to the area.

The council has already agreed a blue plaque will be put up.
