LOVE is in the air in Portsmouth as the area has been revealed as the second most romantic place in the UK.

The Royal Mail discovered that the increase in mail the day before Valentine’s Day was huge in the PO postcode area, earning it the accolade.

Val Bodden, Royal Mail press officer said: ‘The poll is something that we do every year and it is nice to see that people are as romantic as ever.’

Thousands of lovers from south Hampshire sent sweet nothings to partners or the objects of their affection in 2014 to make the top 10.

The PO postcode area narrowly missed out on first place as Welsh romantics in Cardiff took the top spot with Birmingham third.

Although Cupid struck in the south, love didn’t spread to the north of the UK with only the Scottish borders making the top 10 and Northern Ireland was bypassed entirely.

Other cities and towns that featured in the top 10 of the Royal Mail poll included Carlisle, Preston, London, Warrington, Ipswich, Sheffield and finally Exeter.

The company compiled a list of the postcode areas that have the most romantically-themed street names and the PO postcode area came 10th with 27 Love Lanes.

Royal Mail is also issuing a postmark to celebrate Valentine’s Day up until February 14.
