THOUSANDS of people across the area will spend this weekend commemorating 70 years since Victory over Japan Day.

Portsmouth City Council will be hosting a service starting 11am at the Second World War Memorial next to the Cenotaph, in Guildhall Square.

The service will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Frank Jonas, war veterans, representatives from the armed forces and community organisations, and will feature readings and a wreath-laying ceremony.

Live coverage of the commemorative events being held in London will also be shown on the big screen in Guildhall Square.

And on the Sunday, a choral evensong will be held at Portsmouth Cathedral, in High Street, Old Portsmouth.

Smaller commemorations are expected to take place across the area throughout the weekend.
