THE winners of a competition to sing with Brit-award winning group Blake have been chosen.
Members of Urban Vocal Group are overjoyed after the group was picked as winners in a competition which saw a wealth of talent apply.
Chosen by the band themselves, singers with the Havant-based group will now sing with Blake when they perform at the Kings Theatre, Albert Road, Southsea, on June 6.
Charlie Fletcher, founder and group director, thinks it will be a fantastic evening.
He said: ‘We have a unique sound that blends contemporary vocals with multi-part harmonies and I believe we would add an exciting dimension to the evening.
‘We are so proud to have been picked and it is an amazing thing for the group.
‘We started five years ago with six people and now we have over 45 members and it is a testament to just how much we have done.
‘It really is exciting and it is great to think that Blake picked us and they said that they loved us.’
Charlie decided to enter the group into the competition when he received an email about it.
But he wasn’t aware that it was a competition.
He added: ‘I got an email and thought to myself, that would be a fantastic opportunity.
‘So I sent a link of our website to the email address and then got a call saying we’d won.
‘It really is just fantastic.’
The Vocal Urban Group meets every week at Bedhampton Social Hall, Bedhampton Road, and members will now be practising for the four songs they will perform with Blake.
The group, which is made up of 11 to 18-year-olds, will be singing Hallelujah, Up Where We Belong, Jerusalem and Nessum Dorma.
The Kings Theatre, on behalf of the band, called upon local singing groups to apply and was flooded with showreels and performance videos from the various groups.
Sandra Smith, PR and publicity manager at the theatre, said: ‘Blake chose the winners of the competition and I think they chose a fantastic group. They fit in perfectly with the young people’s part because their age range is from 11 to 18 years old. It is just a fantastic opportunity for them to not only perform with Blake but to perform at the Kings Theatre.
‘They will be working hard over the next few weeks practising but I am sure they’ll be brilliant.’
Blake formed in 2007 and their debut album topped the classical music charts.
They are known for performing classics and pop hits in a classical vocal style.
Blake are performing at the Kings Theatre on June 6.
Tickets cost £18 for adults and concessions are available.
