Sophie Davis swapped a football career in the USA for life with her true love when she married Mark Dugan.
The couple, from Locks Heath, tied the knot at the Old Thorns Manor Hotel in Liphook, surrounded by their close friends and family.
Mark’s daughter Jodie, 23, was among those attending.
Sophie, 34 and a football development manager for the Royal Navy FA, says: ‘My favourite part of the day was all of it, I wish I could do it all over again.’
‘Mark’s favourite part was the moment he saw me and his brother’s best man speech.’
The lovebirds met when Mark, a 46-year-old contracts manager, helped out with the Portsmouth Ladies Development Team that Sophie played for.
‘It wasn’t long until we both realised we liked each other and then got together. I had moved in to live with Mark within a month,’ says Sophie.
The couple got engaged over four years ago – a time when Sophie, who has played football since she was 12, had originally planned to pursue a football career in America.
‘I intended to go to the USA to coach football a few years ago. I had an interview in Kent and Mark came with me.’
‘When I got back to the hotel, he’d written me a lovely letter explaining that he didn’t want me to go and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me,’ says Sophie.
‘We went out together that weekend to get the ring.’
The couple spent over three weeks honeymooning in Canada, Miami and Mexico – after deciding to visit places they’d never been before.
Sophie says she is looking forward to the future with Mark as a married couple.
‘We hardly ever argue, we have a lot in common and we laugh a lot together too.’
‘We are just excited about spending the rest of our years together.’
