HARDY volunteers from a power firm took time out to blitz an overgrown churchyard.

More than 20 people from the Southern Electric call centre in Penner Road, Havant, took a day off to visit the St Thomas à Becket church in Warblington.

The interior of the church has undergone a £300,000 restoration following a fire.

The Southern Electric team spent hours clearing brambles, nettles and other weeds and filled dozens of bin bags.

Churchwarden Phoebe Eberle said: ‘The churchyard is well cared for by Colin and Ken who work in the cemetery next door but they are simply too busy to keep on top of things at this time of year when everything is growing so fast.’

Sue Templeton, who organises community schemes at Southern Electric, said: ‘It was nice to be able to complete such an unusual job, which was so clearly appreciated by the church congregation.’
