TWO years ago Pete Barty was given the devastating news that he had cancer.

Now, having run the Great South Run and raised over £9,000 climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, he is preparing to run 26 miles in the London marathon.

Pete, 40, from Osborn Road in Fareham, was diagnosed with bone cancer in November 2009.

He had a major operation to remove a bone in his shoulder which was then filled with a metal replacement.

Now he is in remission and is working hard to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.

He said climbing Kilimanjaro was a huge challenge for him to overcome.

‘It was without doubt the hardest thing I have ever done,’ he said.

‘It was very difficult.

‘But in my mind there was no way I was not going to do it.

‘It was a real challenge.’

Now, Pete has joined local running group the Fareham Crusaders, in a bid to improve his fitness ready for the marathon on Sunday, April 22.

‘It’s always been in the back of my mind to get back into running,’ he said.

‘When I got back from Kili I needed another challenge. I wanted something to drive me forward.

‘So I joined my running club.

‘People from the club have been really supportive.’

Pete has permanent damage to his shoulder and has spent the last couple of years having physiotherapy in a bid to get it as strong as possible to enable him to keep training.

‘I have to work a lot harder because I haven’t got the strength in my arm,’ he said.

‘When it starts getting tough and it’s cold and damp outside it’s important to focus on the reasons why I’m doing this.’
