TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill after vans towing a boat and a caravan collided on the A3.

The accident happened on the northbound carriageway of the A3 between the Buriton turn-off and the Queen Elizabeth Country Park slip road, at 5.15am.

A van towing a boat and another van towing a caravan collided and spun out of control, hitting two other vehicles – one car and a van. They ended up on their sides.

The vehicles flattened the central reservation and some ended up in the southbound carriageway.

There was just one lane open in both directions of the A3 and traffic was backed up as far as Petersfield in the north and Waterlooville in the south. Drivers were stuck for more than an hour. The road did not open fully until gone 8am when all vehicles had been moved but there is still a knock-on effect with long delays on roads leading off of and on to the A3 and A3M.

Although paramedics were sent to the accident none of the people involved were injured.
