Police doing routine checks on vehicles in Waterlooville got a shock after they found a unlocked car on a driveway.
When they went to knock the door of the property to alert the owner, they found that it too was open.
A second car had been left locked on the drive - but the keys for it were just inside the unsecured house.
Police who made the late-night discovery found that the householder was asleep upstairs.
They had to wake him up to alert him to the double problem - but he was so grateful he sent and email of thanks to them the next day.
