A LOCAL authority has become one of the first to sign up to the living wage standard for its directly-employed staff.
Winchester City Council, which covers Wickham, Denmead and Bishop’s Waltham, voted to pay all staff at least £7.45-per-hour.
The move will cost the council up to an extra £20,000-a-year.
Cllr Stephen Godfrey, who is in charge of finance for the council, said: ‘As a responsible employer we believe it is important to pay the living wage.’
The council has 435 staff.
