Miss Fernandes said she believed Britain would be better if it voted to leave the EU in June’s referendum as it would open up trade routes with other countries such as those in Africa.

She said: ‘It is a fallacy to believe the EU is our only option for trade and jobs. If we were independent we could exploit and explore our relationship with countries that are currently under-explored.’

She said that she hoped Britain would become like Switzerland which is one of the richest countries in the world.

Another topic of discussion was immigration, with questions raised about how the country could control its border better.

Miss Fernandes said: ‘There’s a real concern about returning the integrity of our borders and that reinforces my decision to support leaving the European Union.’

Newly-elected Fareham West councillor Tina Ellis went to the meeting to hear Miss Fernandes’ view on local development.
