CALLS have been made for a report to be produced into the ways an error in paying housing benefits can be avoided in future.

Portsmouth residents who claim the allowance were expecting their money on Monday – but now have to wait until tomorrow because of an error by the city council processing payments.

Lib Dem councillor Michael Andrewes, who has raised awareness of the error not being highlighted enough by the council, said: ‘I will pushing for a report to go to councillors on how this could have been better handled – particularly in giving information to local people and the lessons to be learnt from this.’

As reported, around 5,000 people have been affected by the delay and it has left some strapped for cash. It doesn’t affect anyone in council-owned accommodation or those who receive cheques.

Roland Lawrie, 46, of Stamshaw, said he was waiting on £280 and has had to dip into other benefits he receives to pay his rent. ‘It means I don’t have any other money now,’ he said. ‘My rent comes first.’
