WHETHER it be swings, slides or gym equipment – or nothing at all – Fareham Borough Council is asking residents how they would like to see £80,000 spent on a run-down play area.
The improvement works at Abshot Road Play Area, in Titchfield Common, are due to start next year and be finished by the summer of 2014. The council has set aside £80,000 for the project and has opened up a public consultation on how the money would be best spent.
Ward councillor Sarah Pankhurst said: ‘The play area is in a real dire need of updating. The council has made a list of all the play areas it will be revamping. Abshot is at the top of the list which is really good news. It is quite run down at the moment.’
Questionnaires have been sent to 140 houses close to the park and residents can also complete a questionnaire online.
Council leader, Cllr Sean Woodward, said: ‘We like to provide the best possible facilities for the community.
‘I would like to know what children want to see.
‘It allows us a chance to get it right for the age groups who will be using it and we will be taking the neighbour’s opinions into account, too.’
Executive member for leisure, Cllr Connie Hockley, said: ‘It is so important that people get involved in this consultation to help ensure the new play area meets the needs of the children, young people and families that use the park.
‘The existing park is over 10 years old now, so it will be lovely to see some new play equipment and facilities installed at Abshot Road.’
Cllr Pankhurst said: ‘We are trying to get ideas of what people would like to see in that area and for what age group, or even if they still want it or not. Overall, the investment is a very positive step and I am very pleased it has come up. It is good news for Titchfield Common.’
The play area was part of a raft of leisure investments, aimed at improving Fareham’s open spaces, over viewed at the council’s executive meeting last night.
Originally agreed last year, a ten-year commitment was made by the council to invest in outdoor sports facilities and play areas funded from developers contributions and external funding.
The Abshot Road play area questionnaire can be found online at fareham.gov.uk/consultations or call (01329) 824440. Consultation closes on Friday, November 15.
