LIB Dem Faith Ponsonby has been elected as councillor of the Battins ward on Havant Borough Council.

Just 18 per cent of a possible 4,946 voters went to the ballot box to have their say in Thursday’s by-election – 452 of which voted for Cllr Ponsonby.

Labour’s candidate Virginia Steel received 188 votes, Conservative Kristian Sapcote got 153 votes and UKIP candidate Raymond Finch gained 94 votes.

Cllr Ponsonby was first elected as councillor on the Battins ward in November 2006. She was then re-elected in May of 2008, but failed to win back the ward last May after losing by just 60 votes.

The by-election for the seat – one of two in Battins – was called after fellow Lib Dem Katie Ray stood down.

She said: ‘I’m delighted to be back and looking forward to having a voice on the council again. I have been missing that with some of the decisions it has made recently.’
