PEOPLE are being encouraged to take up a sport in the new year.

Portsmouth City Council is promoting six-week sports courses taking place in the city from this month.

Sports clubs are launching introductory six-week sessions, ideal for beginners or people returning to a sport.

A council spokeswoman said: ‘From aikido to softball, with cricket and tennis in between, there’s a sporting course to suit everyone.’

Courses will be run by trained experts and catering for all abilities.

Matt Birch, Portsmouth City Council’s sports officer, wants people to take part.

He said: ‘Many people start the new year with great intentions, but struggle to keep to their resolutions if they can’t find the right training or club.

‘We’ve worked with a range of sporting organisations from across the city to offer six-week training plans.

‘The courses are also ideal if you want to play but aren’t part of a team.

‘Coaches from every discipline are on hand to support you the whole way.’
