AROUND £225,000 will be released by a council to help revamp a leisure centre.

The Conservative cabinet of Havant Borough Council voted to approve to give £225,272 to Horizon Leisure Centres (HLC) to help with the expansion of Waterlooville Leisure Centre, in Waterberry Drive, pictured.

The money has come from developers’ contributions from Taylor Wimpey to the public purse as part of the West of Waterlooville housing development.

Construction started last August and is due to be finished this spring.

But extra funding was needed for the £2.3m project because of refurbishments at Havant Leisure Centre.

A council report said: ‘In the original proposal to cabinet in October 2012 HLC was proposing to fund the first phase gym extension entirely themselves.

‘However since then, following the demise of the Havant Indoor Bowls Centre, HLC with agreement from the council have converted the redundant bowls hall at Havant Leisure Centre into a large modern fitness facility.

‘This project became HLC’s immediate priority and meant that they had to fund this in addition to their plans for Waterlooville Leisure Centre.’
