THOUSANDS of people are being reminded to return this year’s voter registration form – or risk losing their right to vote.

Forms are being sent out as part of Portsmouth City Council’s annual canvass of homes for the electoral register.

Next year’s register will be published in October.

But people not on it will not be able to vote.

The register is also used by credit agencies and residents are warned that if they are not on it they could have trouble getting credit, opening a bank account, and getting a mortgage or mobile phone.

Stewart Agland, the city council’s local democracy manager, said: ‘The right to vote is an integral part of living in a democratic society and it is important that people don’t lose it

‘We are reminding residents, if they haven’t already done so, they should spend a few minutes filling in the form and then returning it.’
