THOUSANDS of Portsmouth households will receive this year’s annual voter registration form this week.

Portsmouth City Council is reminding people not to lose their right to vote as it starts its canvass of homes for the electoral register.

The new electoral register for 2013 will be published on October 16 and anyone who is not included will not be able to vote.

The authority is asking people to complete and return their forms as soon as possible.

Stewart Agland, the council’s local democracy manager, said: ‘The right to vote is an integral part of living in a democratic society and it is important that people don’t lose it.

‘We are reminding residents, if they haven’t already done so, they should spend a few minutes filling in the form and then returning it.

‘If there are no changes needed to the details printed on the form, they can respond through a freephone number, the internet or by text message.

‘This will keep down the costs of compiling the register.’
