THE leader of Portsmouth’s Lib Dem group believes it is unlikely plans to build a 40- storey shard-style tower in the city will ever happen.
It comes after Bouygues Development revealed it did not want to include social housing in its plans to turn Brunel House at The Hard into a high-rise apartment block.
Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson said: ‘Bouygues has been talking about doing this development for the last 18 months.
‘It has been promising a planning application every month for the last year and nothing has happened.
‘It doesn’t seem to me that it is likely to happen.’
While the Tory-led council is calling for Bouygues to provide affordable homes, Cllr Vernon-Jackson says the decision is out of its hands.
The firm has already said it would be unviable to meet the demands.
‘An independent assessor will decide whether it is viable or not viable,’ Cllr Vernon-Jackson said.
‘If the developer is going to make less than 20 per cent profit then it doesn’t have to.’
