WORK has started to demolish the former fire station in Copnor.

Demolition workers were on the Copnor Road site yesterday to remove the building’s fixtures and fittings.

The primary work was carried out in preparation for the main demolition of the building, which is set to start today.

Site supervisor Dale Green, from Portsmouth Demolition and Salvage, said: ‘We stripped all of the furniture and doors from the building, and other bits and pieces.

‘We are hoping to start to bring down the building’s middle section, where the fire engines used to be stored, first.’

He hopes a quarter of the building will be torn down by the end of today.

A two-storey, 50-bed care home will be built there after planners unanimously backed the scheme in November.
