FREE electric blanket safety checks will be taking place in a series of events run by Portsmouth City Council next month.

Unsafe blankets carry a risk of fire, electrocution or electrical burns and faults are not always obvious to owners, but they can be fatal.

Council trading standards officers will be on hand to check blankets on: December 5 at Cosham Fire station, 9.30am-3.30pm; December 6 at Salvation Army, 84 Albert Road, Southsea 9.30am-3pm and on December 7 at Age UK, 18 Kingston Road, 9.30am to 3.30pm.

People can just pop in, or book on 023 9284 1298. Bookings will take preference.

Alan Cufley, head of service for trading standards, said: ‘I’d advise anyone with an electric blanket to come along to one of these events, for peace of mind and to feel safe.’

As part of its Keep Warm and Carry On campaign, the council is offering various grants or loans on ways to keep the cold at bay. For more information call (023) 9268 8369 or e-mail
