THE St John’s College Politics Society is keeping its members – and the local community – up to date on the general election.

Last week saw the society host two hustings for Portsmouth parliamentary candidates.

And on Wednesday, May 6, Shami Chakrabarti CBE will visit the college to talk on issues relating to personal freedom and security.

Ms Chakrabarti has been director of Liberty (the National Council for Civil Liberties) since 2003, after a background working in law.

She has been in the news in connection with issues of personal freedom and state security and is a frequent contributor to BBC Radio 4.

The talk starts at midday and will focus on the issues surrounding civil liberties and human rights.

The audience will be given the opportunity to ask questions.

All are welcome at the talk and anyone interested in finding out more can contact Dr Graham Goodlad on (023) 9281 5118 or email him at ggoodlad@stjohnscollege.co.uk.
