THE Mayor of Gosport will call on UN leaders to take action for a fairer world.

Councillor Richard Dickson will act on behalf of Gosport as a Fairtrade Town, supporting disadvantaged producers, when he signs the declaration tomorrow which will be presented to UN General Assembly in New York, in September.

Sarah Hirom, co-ordinator of Gosport Fairtrade Action, said: ‘Our experience shows that Fairtrade can transform the lives of some of the poorest producers while safeguarding the environment.

‘This people-focused business model needs to be extended to trade and business everywhere, if we are to enjoy a world free from hunger and conflict.’

World leaders at the General Assembly will be discussing a new development framework to replace the 2015 Millennium Development Goals.

The Gosport signing will take place at the Town Hall with members of Gosport Fairtrade Action in support.

Leaders of the 1250 Fairtrade Towns support disadvantaged producers, sustainable livelihoods, labour standards and the phasing-out of child labour.
