EIGHT hundred years ago the Magna Carta cemented the foundations for democracy.

Now, a lecture will discuss Hampshire’s historic links with the document.

This will include the story of King John’s ride from Odiham Castle in Hampshire to consider the creation of a document.

The topic entitled Magna Carta and Hampshire is the focus for this year’s Dudley Keep Memorial Lecture hosted by Hampshire County Council.

Following the welcome by the county council chairman Cllr Jonathan Glen, the lecture will be provided by Dr Nicholas Karn from the University of Southampton.

Cllr Glen said: ‘This year’s lecture takes place exactly 800 years since King John left his castle at Odiham on 10 June 1215 – the ruins of which are now looked after by the County Council.’

The lecture takes place on Wednesday, June 10, in the Great Hall, Winchester from 6.30 to 8.30pm.
