THE leader of Havant Borough Council hopes voters will turn out in force for next month’s elections.

Tory councillor Tony Briggs says the May 5 polls are important because of increased powers to local authorities. He also reminded people to vote in the national referendum, which will decide whether the UK sticks with the first past the post system, or change to Alternative Vote.

He said: ‘Councillors are taking on new powers from the government, and the referendum is the only time people in this country have ever had the chance to choose how elections work.’
