Donald Trump becoming the 45th US president may have been a shock for many, but for fans of The Simpsons his election has been 16 years in waiting.

The popular comedy show featured Trump as his nation’s leader in an episode back in 2000, called ‘Bart to the Future’.

In the episode a glimpse into the future shows Lisa Simpson being named as president, taking over from Trump.

In a scene showing her talking to aides in the White House, she says: ‘As you know we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.’

In an interview with The Guardian earlier this year, Simpsons creator Matt Groening revealed writers had chosen Trump because he ‘was of course the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of at the time.’

Trump won the race for the White House this morning after voters gambled on his promise to ‘make America great again’.
