DEVELOPMENT of the Gosport Leisure Centre is almost complete after a pub opened its doors to the public.
The pub, called The Sailmaker, officially opened to punters yesterday – and the new Premier Inn Hotel is due to open imminently.
The new leisure centre opened on December 31 last year. It was officially opened by Olympic medallist Colin Jackson in April.
The centre replaced the old Holbrook Recreation Centre which had been in a state of disrepair for a number of years.
Now, the next stage in the development process has been completed.
Councillor Mark Hook, the leader of Gosport Borough Council, said it’s good to see another part of the complex finished.
‘I’m delighted that it’s all gone to plan and delivered on time and on budget,’ he said.
‘Businesses have continually said about the lack of beds.
‘We have had some niche boutique hotels in Gosport but there was never sufficient space for the demand and requirements for local businesses.
‘Also people want to come and stay for weddings and celebrations.
‘The fact that we have got the first of these hotels is great. It’s a very positive start.’
And Cllr Hook said the new development is a good asset to the local community and the surrounding area.
‘It’s more local jobs for local people both in the construction industry and now with employment opportunities,’ he said.
‘We recognise that we have got to try and create jobs on the peninsula.
‘There will be at least 100 jobs on the new site.’
The new leisure centre has proven popular.
Now, the town is just waiting for the new ice rink to be built.
‘That will be the final phase,’ Cllr Hook said.
‘We are a bit disappointed that the work hasn’t started already.
‘We were told by the owners that they would be looking to start in the summer because it’s their quietest period.
‘We do have regular contact with the owners.
‘They ensure us that the work will be happening.
‘It will be great when that’s the final piece in the jigsaw.
‘The Gosport Leisure Centre will be completed.’
