TWO Liberal Democrat councillors from Fareham have backed a policy to decrease Britain’s nuclear defence programme.

Cllr Jim Forrest and Cllr Katrina Trott were at the Lib Dem party conference in Glasgow.

They voted to support a policy which will mean building fewer new nuclear-armed submarines, as well as armed patrols with nuclear missiles being maintained only when there is a perceived threat.

The policy also calls for armed forces to be better equipped to defend the UK, providing humanitarian intervention and combating piracy and international crime.

The Lib Dems hope that this will bring the country’s defences up to date.
