GOSPORT’S MP has praised plans to make forced marriage a criminal offence.

Caroline Dinenage had previously challenged the government on its plans to tackle the practice of parents who force their children into an unwanted marriage.

Now the Prime Minister has said he will make forced marriage a criminal offence.

Ms Dinenage said: ‘Forced marriage is an abhorrent practice that has no place in our modern age.

‘It is a fundamental abuse of human rights and treats people as little more than slaves.

‘I am delighted the government is sending out a strong message this practice will not be tolerated by making it a criminal offence.’

The government has also pledged £500,000 to help prevent forced marriages and support victims.

Campaigners have warned making it a crime may force the practice underground.
