A FORMER mayor of Gosport has discovered a thank you letter sent to him by Margaret Thatcher.

Cllr Peter Edgar was Mayor of Gosport in 1997, 15 years after the end of the Falklands War.

To mark the occasion a small rededication service was planned for the Falklands Gardens, on June 15, with locally bereaved families.

But it came to the attention of Baroness Thatcher who decided to go along, which caused major security concerns.

Cllr Edgar said: ‘This was the very first time that anybody had bothered to acknowledge the Falklands veterans since the campaign ended.’

Mrs Thatcher’s letter read: ‘Thank you so much for your welcome and warm hospitality on the occasion of the Falklands memorial ceremony in Gosport. It was a most moving service.’
