New county councillor elected for south Hampshire

THE newly-elected councillor for the southern parishes division of Hampshire has pledged to act on what the people say.

Conservative candidate Cllr Patricia Stallard won the county council seat at the by-election called after the death of cllr Freddie Allgood late last year.

Cllr Stallard already represents Denmead for Winchester City Council, where she is also cabinet member for culture heritage and sport.

She polled 1,661 votes, a majority of more than 600 over Lib Dem rival Vivian Achwal.

She said: ‘I don’t think a politician should act in isolation and I don’t think a politician should impose their views on the people. People who know me know I’m a very active person and if someone comes to me, I won’t let go until I get an answer.’

She is hoping to set up a drop-in clinic in Whiteley.

The division covers Southwick, North Boarhunt, Waterlooville, Denmead, Whiteley and Wickham.

Stephen Harris for UKIP polled 133, David Picton-Jones for Labour polled 124, and John Vivian for the Greens polled 130 votes. The turnout was 25 per cent.

Is this like a Lib Dem pledge? Without being too pessimistic her answer will be : ' I can't do anything about that' :-) I think next time we should try a monkey with a blue rosette just to see if it could win.

Bravo Patricia. Already doing a brilliant job for Denmead. All the best in your new role.

Oh we are being nasty tonight, aren't we, "Blossom"? Why am I having a dig saying that the new councillor has a lot of issues to pick up? In case you hadn't realised, the Southern Parishes covers a big area, so that's to be expected. Cllr Stallard is well-received in her own area as well as in the Winchester council, so I dare say that she'll make a good job of things in the other parishes as well. And yes, the turnout was low, even for a local election. I don't think there was any sinister reason behind it, I don't think that the result would have been any different and I'm not unhappy with the result, as the person best suited got the job. So get off your high horse for once.

What's the matter "Blossom"? Did I strike a nerve somewhere? If the turnout wasn't newsworthy, it wouldn't have got a mention in the article. I'm quite looking forward to a new councillor in the area, especially one with some decent experience. She's certainly got lots to get stuck into.

Oh it's Sunday Sid, give it a rest and chill out. You seem to be the only person with your own agenda around here. Why knock the turn out? Was there nothing else you could say........

A poor turnout but then maybe people saw things as a foregone conclusion. "I don’t think a politician should act in isolation and I don’t think a politician should impose their views on the people." I do hope that tha's the case; there are too many people acting on their own agendas around these parts.
