SHE’S all set to take the plunge for charity – and here is Penny Mordaunt in training for this weekend’s episode of Splash!.
The Portsmouth North MP is taking part in the ITV diving programme and will be donating her £10,000 fee to The Hilsea Lido Pool for the People. The money will be used to fund new diving boards at the lido.
Ms Mordaunt has been learning the art of diving from Tom Daley, who won a bronze medal in the sport at the 2012 Olympics in London and is mentoring all the contestants on the show.
Penny said: ‘I think it’s hard for me to imagine a day job that is more different to diving.
‘In the House of Commons there is generally not that much physicality, there is a lot of sitting around.
‘The only exercise we do is when we have to bob up and down asking questions, which is always good on the old thigh muscles.
‘I think you have to be quite brave in politics, you have to be very focused on your values.
‘Some of those skills might be necessary when I’m on the high board trying to get control of myself and not be nervous – apart from that, though, I think they are radically different.’
Ms Mordaunt said she thinks she will get support from her fellow MPs.
‘I think they are going to be supportive of me,’ added the 40-year-old.
‘Despite the argy bargy you see on Prime Minister’s Questions each week, MPs get on with each other quite well – we have to else we wouldn’t get anything done.
Ms Mordaunt added: ‘I think one of the biggest challenges for me is, aside from having no skill or grace, the fact I’m not good with heights.
‘I have no strategy whatsoever in this contest. I think you can focus on what you can control, so my own nerves in this case and trying to listen and trying to learn. I think that’s the best attitude you can have going into something like this.
‘I have come to the conclusion already that I’m not going to be lifting a trophy above my head.
‘I don’t think I’m going to win this but I think it’s an amazing skill to learn to do, so I’m going to give it my all and throw myself into it – hopefully without injuring myself in the process.’
Other contestants this week include singer and musician Paul Young, model Danielle Lloyd, comedian Patrick Monahan and The Only Way Is Essex star Dan Osbourne.
Two of the five contestants will make it through to the semi-finals.
The show will be broadcast from 7pm on ITV this Saturday.
