FORMER staff and swimmers at Gosport’s leisure centre are wanted to help mark the closure of the pool tomorrow.

The Holbrook Recreation Centre, in Forest Way, will shut its doors for good to make way for the town’s new leisure centre nearby.

Gosport Borough Council is closing the pool tomorrow, months earlier than originally planned, because it says the building is unsafe due to problems with the roof.

Now staff at the centre are calling for anyone who has been involved with the pool during its history to gather for a photograph outside the building on its last day.

Manager Paul Clark said: ‘It would be a great way of marking the end of an era.

‘We are hoping that everyone who has been involved with the centre over the 36 years it’s been here will turn out.

‘Anyone who has been involved in any way whether it’s through swimming, using the gym or being a member of clubs is welcome.’

The pool will close on Saturday at 5pm.

Anyone who wants to take part in the send-off should meet outside the building for 5.30pm.

Staff and swimmers mounted a last-ditch bid to prevent the closure on Tuesday at a meeting with the council.

But councillors said the centre was too decrepit to remain open any longer.

The pool was originally supposed to close a few weeks before the new centre opens later this year.
