GOSPORT’S council is urging people to report benefit fraudsters.

It comes after an investigation by Gosport Borough Council’s fraud team caught a man who didn’t tell the council he was no longer living at an address he was receiving benefits for.

Peter Dickinson, 45, formerly of Marlin Close in Gosport, pleaded guilty to one offence under the Social Security Administration Act for dishonestly failing to promptly notify the council he had left the address and moved to Fareham.

As a result of failing to notify the council he received more than £1,000 in housing benefit he wasn’t entitled to.

The money must now be paid back in full.

Dickinson was also sentenced at Fareham Magistrates Court to a 14-day curfew where he must stay indoors between 7pm and 7am.

If you believe someone is receiving benefits they are not entitled to, you can call the council’s benefit investigation hotline on (023) 9254 5545.

All information received is treated in confidence.
