PORTSMOUTH North MP Penny Mordaunt has been named as the minister for the armed forces.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced her new job role today for the Ministry of Defence as part of his cabinet reshuffle.

He announced that she would be the ‘first woman in this role’.

She has previously been parliamentary under secretary of state at the Department for Communities and Local Government, with responsibilities including high streets and coastal communities.

Ms Mordaunt is a Royal Navy reservist, serving as a sub-lieutenant at King Alfred on Whale Island,

The daughter of a paratrooper, she is named after the Leander-class frigate HMS Penelope.
