MIKE Hancock is recovering well after undergoing major heart bypass surgery.

The Portsmouth South MP was admitted to hospital almost two weeks ago and is expected to remain in Southampton General until the end of this week.

He initially underwent a minor operation in Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, but this was unsuccessful.

‘I’m very grateful for all the good wishes I’ve been sent by the people of Portsmouth,’ he said. ‘I want to say thank you to everybody who has offered me their support.’

The problem first reared its head a month ago, but Mr Hancock said at first he thought it was a trapped nerve.

His office remains open and said he would try to answer all the letters he has received.
