PRAYERS were top of the agenda at last night’s meeting of Fareham Borough Council.

They remained as the first item, as they have for the past 13 years at the district’s full council meetings.

Daniel Whitehead of Fareham Community Church led the prayers with all councillors and officers present.

The issue of prayers at council meetings was recently thrust into the spotlight when the High Court ruled they were illegal as part of the agenda.

In response, last weekend communities secretary Eric Pickles fast-tracked part of the upcoming Localism Act, giving councils greater freedom and effectively reversing the ruling.

Before the intervention, council leader, Cllr Sean Woodward, had vowed to keep prayers as part of the agenda regardless.
