POLICE have confirmed they are continuing to probe an election leaflet posted to people living in the Leesland ward at Gosport on polling day.

The anonymous leaflet was damning of Independent Leesland candidate Dave Smith and featured claims which, if false, could be in breach of electoral law.

Mr Smith lost his seat having polled just 96 votes. He was replaced by Liberal Democrat Maria Diffey who won the seat with 507 votes.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘Police can confirm an investigation is continuing into allegations over the contents of a leaflet being distributed in the Gosport area.

‘Officers are taking statements from people believed to be affected.

‘These statements will help police to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed.’

Mr Smith, a former leader of Gosport Borough Council, quit the Liberal Democrat party to sit as an Independent in 2009.
