WORK has finally begun to transform the Holbrook leisure centre in Gosport.

The £7.2m Gosport Leisure Park in Forest Way will have a 25m pool, learner pool, fitness and dance studio and play area.

Outside, there will be five-a-side and seven-a-side all-weather football pitches and parking.

And the town’s first chain hotel, run by Premier Inn, will also open on the site.

Council leader Mark Hook, pictured above with Peter Kirkham from developers DC Leisure, said: ‘I am absolutely delighted that work has commenced on Gosport’s new leisure centre.

‘This leisure park is very important for our town. I promised it would be delivered and now it is.

‘Residents will be able to see our new leisure centre rising out of the ground in the coming months. This is an exciting time for Gosport.’

Mr Kirkham, development director at DC Leisure, which will carry out the works, said: ‘It is excellent news that work has commenced on our new facility in Gosport and we look forward to getting to know our new customers.

‘This project has moved incredibly quickly to get to this point thanks to the positive attitude of the council. It has been a pleasure to work with them.’

The new leisure centre will open towards the end of the year although it is hoped that part of it will be open in time for the Olympic games this summer.

Does anyone know how big the gym will be, the current one is the size of a kitchen and it smells worse than Peel Common sewers. Will it be a large gym ? Are there plans published online ?

Juggernaut The News will have ip address logging on. Only a bad admin would turn it off. As newspapers print stories online at the request of the police they would also have it on in case some criminal or a witness comments on a crime. The use of proxy servers can be blocked by The News and if they are not blocking them that is bad admin too. I would assume that The News could work out who is who. I think it should be a rule that a Councillor makes public their online TheNews nickname and it should be a case of misconduct if they secretly use an alias.

Pentip and Gosport View are both very thinly disguised aliases of Gosport councillors. Read their comments it's pretty obvious. Just shows the -low- quality of local politician we have here - they dare not even speak up in their own names!

Wonder how many jobs in the construction phase will go to Gosport workers?

Dale, you cannot identify which IP addresses post on here unless you're the admin and they've got logging turned on. It would admittedly make detecting sockpuppets somewhat easier unless of course they were going through proxies etc.

A)would the 'politicians' keep to the story and not use the postings as a medium to air their playground squabbles B) we had a lesiure centre and we will still have a leisure centre, the deveolpers wouldn't be developing if they thought they wouldn't make any money C) @9 Dale, we could talk up the hight street but its a dump (caused by succesive councils since the 60's), why lie to the visitors !

It seems my comments @25 are being moderated. I assume you'll see them in due course, but in essence, I say this. I haven't attacked anyone in my previous comments, only corrected some factual errors peddled by the Lib Dems. or what the rest of us would call lies. Indeed the supporting notes below proving the Conservatives right were taken from The News website!

Thanks to those who have spoken of my fact-based, and fallacy correcting past correspondence here. However, the responses I made in posts below were merely evidenced by other articles from this website! They weren't partisan, albeit that they proved the Conservatives position to be entirely correct. As opposed to the distortions peddled by the Liberal Democrats and their leader. or what the rest of us would call bare-faced lies! This the same Liberal Democrat leader who was once suspended by a High Court Judge for two months. And as for those correspondence here with multiple-pseudonymality-disorder, I can't profess to know all of the different identities they exhibit, but any layman can see the similarities in syntax in their writings, even when they try to mask some of their identities with spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors! Sadly I haven't got time to do so, but anyone with a spare five minutes could download reading software and figure out the users that are clearly one and the same! Not to mention, if you were inclined, figuring out that the IP addresses from where the various pseudonyms write are exactly the same!!

Pugman 106. Why are you so negative all the time. Here is a really positive story about the new Leisure Centre and all you can do is knock it, suggest it might fail financially, that the hotel is a waste of time and complain about the high street which has nothing to do about the leisure center at all. You really are a very unhappy person. Try joining with the many Gosport people who are working for the future of our town, if nothing else it might cheer you up!

Dale Fletcher, aren't you ever objective? You sound like some sort of Conservative robot - and this is from someone who voted blue in the last election.

Come on Dale I'm sure you can tell us some positive points about the Gosport Conservatives. Have you mentioned Caroline yet, no doubt you wil, that's of course if you can take some time off from bashing cheggers. No doubt I have become cheggers, sorry to disappoint but I am also using my correct name.

my views are not shared obviously but they are my views none the less and i shall express them.ok,the high street dying on its ass thing was maybe a bit much but unless you want a tattoo or a house there aint much to look at but as the occupancy stats show there is a wide range of nothing.the leisure centre will maybe be a good thing only time will tell and if hook and his team bring it in on budget(they have already failed on time)then fair play.as for the hotel does anybody really believe that a person would come to stay at the premier inn as a base to visit the sights and sounds of gosport or will it be marketed as a hotel with superb links to the motorway network i.e straight in and out of town

Straight to the point and well done for presenting the facts Mr. Dale Fletcher. It's good to see the usual doomongers, who for political purposes seek to denigrate our town and its soundly led council at every opportunity, lost for words. It's time they recognised the damage they do with their non stop tirade of inaccurate and poisonous comments, for business, retail trade and investment in our town.

@18 Sir Lancelot Didnt Mr Fletcher just use a quote too support the work the tories have done, showing that cheggers acheived nothing. Thats not obsesion, only proving a factual point.
