PLANS to build a Sainsbury’s store in Bishop’s Waltham have been approved by the Communities Secretary Eric Pickles.

Last month councillors at Winchester City Council approved the plans for the store at a special meeting.

But a number of conditions could have put a stop to the plans, and they were sent to the Mr Pickles for approval.

Today it was announced that the plans will not be called in, paving the way for the supermarket giant to build on the old Abbey Mill site in the town.

It comes despite hundreds of people turning out to the meeting at Winchester Guildhall last month to protest against the plans.
