SEVEN Portsmouth City Council employees earn more than £100,000 a year, new figures reveal.

Chief executive David Williams tops the list with £148,885. The council solicitor, port manager and four directors also earn above £100,000.

Gosport’s chief executive takes home £105,854, while Fareham’s most senior civil servant earns £128,000.

While some critics say the figures are obscene in times of severe cuts, councils have defended the salaries.

Cllr Hugh Mason, in charge of resources at Portsmouth City Council, said: ‘Simply put, if we don’t pay good salaries we don’t get good people. The council is a business with a budget of £600m a year, and we have to be in line with other similar authorities. When setting levels of pay we take advice from a panel of independent consultants and look at national pay scales.’

The highest earner is Hampshire County Council chief Andrew Smith who was paid £246,648.
