SHORTENED opening hours for Hampshire’s 24 rubbish tips have been agreed to save cash.

The 24 household waste recycling centres run by Hampshire County Council include those at Bishop’s Waltham, Gosport, Havant, Hayling Island, Waterlooville and Segensworth.

They currently open at 8am and close at 7pm from April 1 to September 30, from 8am to 4pm from October 1 to the end of February, and from 8am to 5pm from March 1 to March 31.

A decision was made today by the council that these sites will now open at 9am and close at 6pm all year round, saving the council £187,000 a year.

Executive member for the environment Sean Woodward signed off the findings of a select committee, which recommended the times.

Cllr Woodward said he had taken into account more than 6,000 responses in a public consultation last year and the findings from the select committee in his decision.

The changes, which also include charges for bags of rubble, bricks and asbestos, were announced last November as the council said it needed to save £1m from the money it allocated to the tips.

The new hours will come in from April 1. All tips will have the same hours, except Hayling Island and Hedge End, which have their own opening times due to planning restrictions.
