TEN thousand more street lights will be turned off after midnight.

West Sussex County Council already operates a 12.30am until 5.30am blackout in quieter areas of the county.

There were fears that it could lead to an increase in crime but a council scrutiny panel recently found no evidence of that. Now the council has confirmed a total of 40,000 lights will be switched off for part of the night.

All town centre lights will stay on. The majority of street lights are already dimmed by 50 per cent after midnight to save energy.
